MMS 172 - ASSIGNMENT 1A

Knowing Where I'm At

Preparation

Prior to the start of the term, I asked Sir Al (whom I got acquainted with during MMS 173 last term) for recommendations on equipment that I can use. I’ve always thought of upgrading my son’s gaming set-up so I figured might as well do it now to justify the cost right?

After a day or so of researching and justifying if I should do the upgrade, I settled with purchasing the Shure MV7+ podcast microphone and the Shure SRH840A professional studio headphones. I was a bit hesitant whether I should go with Audio Technica ATH-M40x because it was recommended by Sir Al, but it wasn’t available in any stores in Abu Dhabi, so I invested with the Shure SRH840A instead.

Similar to MMS 173, I decided to use my son’s room as a make-shift studio since it doesn’t have windows as I hope to minimise unnecessary noise from outside. Since my old Macbook often emits fan noise when using heavy apps, I opted to use my iPad to navigate the recording app that came with the microphone.

Clip 1: Voice Recording

For the first recording, I tried my best to find the correct pace without having to gasp for air as I read through the script (I think it’s my three first names that made me struggle). It took me about 6 recordings before I got it right.

Clip 2: Water Droplets

It took me about 8 takes to get the second recording right. I had to try different angles to ensure that I record as much of the water ripples as possible. Because I was using the aquarium tank for this activity, I struggled recording the water ripples without capturing the water filter’s vibrating noise as well.

Overall Experience

Although the experience is entirely new to me, I can say that I enjoyed the recording process so much and I can honestly say that I’m looking forward in recording more for the upcoming activities.
